How do I read a site scan report?
Read it from the top down. The site score comes first, with a line saying how many pages we scanned and how many checks we could judge. Then a score per course, then every finding with how many pages it turned up on, then every page we read with its own score and full report.
-
The score and the line under it
The site score sits at the top, out of 100, with its verdict in words. The line under it starts “We scanned” and says how many pages we read and where they came from, such as “using the list you pasted”, then “We could judge” so many of the checks we can run. Read it first: it tells you how much the number rests on.
The line also says “This is not an average of those pages”. Each check is graded once for the whole site, so a site usually scores a little below its own pages.
-
The tasting menu
The tasting menu gives each scored course its score across the site, and Measured, not scored holds the courses that are shown but never counted, just as on a page report.
-
The findings
Under On at least one page, every check that failed or was worth a look anywhere is listed, the ones to fix first. Beside each one is how far it reached: “2 of 2” means two of the two pages that check applied to, and on a larger site “about 39 pages” is our estimate for the whole site, from the kinds of page it turned up on.
Press a finding to open it. What we found says how many pages failed, Why it matters and What good looks like follow, and Where lists each page it was found on, with Full page report to open that page’s own report.
-
Pages we scanned
Pages we scanned lists every page we read with its own score, lowest first, and Open beside each one opens its full page report. A page you pinned carries a Pinned tag. On a site report, the Chart view places each page against the Site score; Table lists them.
-
The shape of your site
The shape of your site groups the pages that share a template, one row per kind of page, with how many URLs of that kind we found and how many we scanned. Where we read more than one page of a kind, the row shows the range they scored, such as “scored 85–91 · median 89”; a single page reads “too few for a range”. Bars and Table show the same rows.
-
Homepage performance and the run itself
Homepage performance measures the home page only and never moves the site score; Open the homepage report shows its full panel. At the bottom, Status says how the run ended, such as Done or Partly done, with when it Started and Finished. Scan another site starts a new one.
At the top, Link to this scan says the report is private to your account until you press Create a share link.
