How do I recover from a scan that didn’t work?

Read the small line above the heading. It says whose side the problem is on: In your browser, On our side, On the site’s side, or This link. That tells you what to do: let the check through your blocker, try again in a few minutes, check the address, or ask for a fresh link. Press Try again where it is offered.

  1. If the form refuses what you typed

The message appears under the box and nothing is lost. “That doesn’t look like an address — try something like yoursite.com” asks for a web address. “That’s more than 8 scans in a minute from here” means our limit, not your site: a performance check counts as one, so give it a minute, then try again.

  2. In your browser

“We couldn’t verify your browser” means the quick check before each scan didn’t come back, usually because a privacy extension or content blocker stopped it. Allow this page in your blocker and press Try again.

  3. On our side

A screen marked On our side is never a verdict on your site. “That one’s on us” means scanning is switched off for now: try again in a few minutes. “We lost that scan on the way back” means the connection dropped before the results reached you: press Try again.

  4. On the site’s side

“We couldn’t reach” the site means it didn’t connect or didn’t answer: check the address is the one you meant, then try again. A site that “didn’t answer in time” may be slow or busy: try again in a little while. One that “answered with an error” returned an HTTP error instead of a page: scan it again once it serves the page.

When the site answered but turned us away, you get a report with No score for this one instead, and How do I let the scanner in?, under More help below, covers it.

  5. This link

A report link that doesn’t open says why. “We couldn’t find that scan” and “That scan link is broken” mean the link was mistyped or cut short when it was copied: ask for it again, or press Scan another site or Scan a page for a new one. “That scan didn’t finish” means the scan behind it never completed: run a fresh one.

Any other address that doesn’t exist on Bot Appétit shows “This page got devoured.”, with Run a free scan to start again.

  6. If a site scan didn’t work

The form says what it couldn’t accept under the box, such as “Everything has to be on one site”, “We can only scan web addresses that start with http or https”, or “Enter a domain, a sitemap URL, or a list of pages.” Fix the entry and press Scan my site again.

A run that stopped says “This scan did not finish” and, plainly, “Running it again is the right next step.” “We couldn’t read this site, so there is nothing to report” means the address is wrong or the site refused our scanner; check the address character by character, or let us in.

  7. If a site scan link won’t open

“Sign in to see this scan” means the scan belongs to an account: sign in and you are brought straight back. “That shared link isn’t working any more” means sharing was turned off or the address changed on the way: the person who ran the scan can send you a fresh link. “No such scan” means the link doesn’t match a scan we hold.

  8. Tell us if a result looks wrong

Every error screen ends with Result look wrong? Tell us. It opens an email to us about that screen, so you can say what you expected.
