Not flagged for malware or phishing

Is my site flagged as unsafe, and what happens if it is?

We ask Google Safe Browsing, the list of known malware and phishing sites that browsers consult before they open a page. If your site is on it, visitors meet a full-screen warning instead of your homepage, and most of them turn back.

What it actually is

Safe Browsing is a constantly updated register of addresses that have been caught serving malware, tricking people into handing over passwords, or pushing unwanted software. Chrome, Android and many other products check it before they load a page. It is not a judgement of your design or your content — it is a record that something on your site was seen doing harm, often something you did not put there.

Why it matters

A flag does not lower you a little; it stands between every visitor and your site. The warning is red, it fills the screen, and it says the site may harm their computer. Assistants and tools that weigh whether a source is safe to recommend read the same kind of signal, and none of them has a reason to send someone to a page the browser is about to block.

What good looks like

Your site is simply not on the list, and stays off it because what it serves is what you put there: no injected scripts, no hijacked pages, no files someone else uploaded. Clean is the normal state. The work is in noticing quickly when that changes.

Being honest about it

Nearly every site we scan passes this, and that is the honest expectation. It is rare and it is severe, which is why it is on the report: the cost of not knowing is days of lost visitors before anyone thinks to look. If our lookup cannot get a clear answer, we leave the check off the report rather than tell you that you are clean.

Where most sites go wrong

The usual cause is not the owner but an intruder: an outdated plugin or a leaked password lets someone plant a redirect or a fake login page deep in the site, where the owner never browses. The site looks fine from the homepage while one forgotten folder is serving a phishing kit. The second cause is borrowed trouble, such as an ad network or a third-party script that started serving something it should not.

Not sure where yours stands?

A free scan checks this and everything else in about 20 seconds — no signup. Or if it's already flagged and you'd rather it were simply handled, we do that too.
