Does my site need a favicon?
Yes, and it is one of the cheapest things on this list. The favicon is the little icon that stands for your site wherever there is no room for a logo: browser tabs, bookmarks, search listings, and the source chips some assistants show beside an answer.
What it actually is
It is your logo shrunk to the size of a fingernail. Browsers fetch it automatically, either from the icon the page points to or from a standard address at the root of the site, and every tool that lists your site next to others uses it to tell you apart. When there is none, the tool draws a generic grey placeholder.
Why it matters
People recognise shapes and colours faster than they read names. In a row of open tabs, a list of search results or a set of sources under an AI answer, your icon is what says "this is the one you know". A blank placeholder does not hurt you so much as fail to help: it makes your site look unfinished in exactly the places where it sits beside competitors.
What good looks like
A simple, recognisable mark that still reads at a tiny size, served from a real image file, with larger versions for phones that save your site to the home screen. Either the page points at it, or it sits at the root address browsers check by default — both work.
Being honest about it
This is a small brand and trust signal and nothing more. A missing favicon will never fail your scan, and no machine will misread your content without one. We include it because it shows up in places that matter more each year, especially beside AI answers, and because it is very rarely hard to have.
Where most sites go wrong
The usual failure is a favicon that was set on the old site and lost in a rebuild, so the new site quietly falls back to the placeholder. The sneakier one is an icon address that answers with a web page instead of an image — common on platforms that send every unknown address to the homepage — which looks fine in the code and draws nothing.
Not sure where yours stands?
A free scan checks this and everything else in about 20 seconds — no signup. Or if it's already flagged and you'd rather it were simply handled, we do that too.
Flagged for this one? We handle it. No pitch, just a plain-English chat.
