Universal Commerce Protocol manifest

Can an AI shopping agent buy from my store?

The Universal Commerce Protocol is an open standard for AI agents that shop on someone's behalf. A store publishes a profile at a fixed address on its domain saying what it offers and how an agent can complete a purchase. We check for it only on pages that tell us they sell something.

What it actually is

Think of it as the trade counter at the back of a shop, with its own price list and order form for buyers who are not walking the aisles. The aisles are your website for people; the profile is the counter for agents, describing your catalogue, checkout and payment options in a form software can act on without reading product pages one by one.

Why it matters

When a person asks an assistant to find and buy something, the assistant favours stores it can actually transact with. A store without a machine-readable way to sell is one the agent can describe but not buy from, which hands the sale to a competitor that can. The protocol is backed by Google, Shopify, Walmart, Stripe and a long list of retailers and payment companies.

What good looks like

A profile at the standard address on your store's domain that describes what you sell, the ways an agent can complete a purchase and the transports you support, and that stays in step with your real checkout.

Being honest about it

This is an Advanced check, so it never fails a page and stays out of your headline score. It is also new, and most stores do not publish a profile yet, so a warning is normal rather than alarming. If the page we scan shows no sign of selling anything, we leave this check out entirely instead of telling a portfolio or a blog to set up agent checkout.

Where most sites go wrong

The usual case is a store on a platform that offers this but has not switched it on, or a store whose product pages carry no structured data saying it sells anything, so agents do not see a shop at all. The other is a profile that describes services the store no longer runs.

Not sure where yours stands?

A free scan checks this and everything else in about 20 seconds — no signup. Or if it's already flagged and you'd rather it were simply handled, we do that too.
