AI discovery via DNS

Can AI agents find my services through DNS?

DNS is the internet's address book, and two proposals would let it say "this domain has an AI agent, and here is where to reach it" before anything else is fetched. We look for a record in either format on your domain. Very few domains publish one, and that is not a failing.

What it actually is

It is a line in the phone book saying "for the agent, dial this number". One proposal, AID, is a community specification that puts a single text record under an agent label on your domain. The other, DNS-AID, is an IETF draft that describes agent services with newer service records. Both point to an endpoint, such as an MCP server, without loading a web page.

Why it matters

DNS is fast, cached everywhere and can be cryptographically signed, which makes it an attractive first stop for an agent deciding whether a domain has anything for it. If one of these proposals wins, a record would let agents find your services the way mail servers have long been found through DNS.

What good looks like

If you run an agent-facing service: a record in one of the proposed formats on your domain, pointing to an endpoint that answers, in a zone that is signed so the answer can be trusted.

Being honest about it

This is the most speculative check we run, and it never fails a page or touches your headline score. Neither proposal is a ratified standard, they are not compatible with each other, and adoption is close to zero, so a warning here describes nearly every domain on the internet. We keep it because the idea is sound and live adopters exist, not because anyone needs it this year.

Where most sites go wrong

The trap is the wildcard record: some large domains answer every DNS name with the same text, so a careless probe would think they publish everything. Among real adopters, the usual slip is a record on the bare domain while the website lives on www, or the other way round.
